HS2 Routewide Groundwater Control Design

Project overview

HS2 Phase 1 is the most ambitious rail infrastructure project in the UK in over a century, creating a high-speed link between London and Birmingham. The route includes redeveloped and new stations, extensive tunnelling, cuttings, and deep shaft structures. To support this construction, WJ has been engaged to deliver detailed groundwater control designs that are vital for the successful execution of below-ground works.

Client

Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV), Skanska Costain Strabag (SCS), and Align JV

Project owner

HS2 Ltd

WJ’s role spans the full route of Phase 1, providing design expertise for groundwater control measures needed to support excavation and construction activities across a wide variety of geologies and structural configurations.

Project Scope and Challenges

WJ’s work involves delivering custom groundwater control designs to support:

  • Cuttings, Tunnel Cross Passages, and Shaft Construction: Ensuring dry, safe excavation environments across the route.
  • Numerical Modelling: Creation of 2D and 3D hydrogeological models to assess varying ground conditions, permeability, and aquifer behaviour based on site-specific data.
  • Conceptual Design Integration: Incorporating construction drawings and ground investigation findings to produce robust, flexible groundwater control solutions.

Key challenges included:

  • Adapting designs across multiple geological formations and construction scenarios.
  • Performing sensitivity analyses to validate designs under different hydrogeological stress conditions.
  • Collaborating with various JV partners while maintaining a consistent standard of quality and delivery.
WJ’s Innovative Approach

What sets WJ apart is our highly experienced in-house design team, which brings over 130 years of combined expertise to the project. Our capabilities include:

  • Hydrogeological Modelling: Using SEEP/W 3D software for groundwater and surface water flow modelling.
  • Pumping Test Analysis: Leveraging Aquifer Win 32 to refine model accuracy and improve system performance.
  • Pipeline and Flow Modelling: Applying Pipe Flow Expert software to assess discharge systems.
  • Detailed Design Drawings: Delivered using AutoCAD and Revit to ensure clarity and coordination with other design teams.
A Key Contribution to HS2’s Success

WJ’s involvement has led to the successful completion of 42 groundwater control design packages to date, incorporating data from 28 pumping tests and 17 instrumentation and monitoring systems installed by WJ. These designs have ensured safe excavation conditions, minimized risk, and supported timely construction progress.

The WJ Difference

At WJ, our design capability is as strong as our field execution. The HS2 design programme showcases our unique ability to deliver engineering-led groundwater control solutions that integrate seamlessly into some of the UK’s most complex construction environments.
