At WJ, we’re proud to be playing a key role in one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure projects – Sizewell C, a new nuclear power station on the Suffolk coast.
Specialist Water Management at Sizewell C
Working in an area of environmental sensitivity, close to the Sizewell Marshes Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), our team has been delivering specialist water management services to support safe and sustainable construction.
Our work has included:
- Surface water management – surface water pumping and water treatment systems at the Main Construction Area (MCA) successfully removing over 20 million litres of water to date – reducing runoff risk and maintaining stable working conditions for the enabling works teams.
- Pumping tests & wellfield analysis – evaluating long-term abstraction viability to inform WJ’s dewatering designs at the MCA and construction water supply abstraction consents at the Temporary Construction Area (TCA).
- 3D groundwater modelling – simulating drawdown effects from pumping activities to optimise WJ’s detailed dewatering design for the main cut-off wall at the MCA to ensure all risks are mitigated, including adequate protection to the adjacent SSSI wetlands and Sizewell B.
- Water quality monitoring – sampling and analysis sitewide from boreholes and water bodies to demonstrate compliance with Environment Agency discharge consents and providing real-time insights into groundwater-surface water interactions
Groundwater Modelling and Design Support
This continues WJ’s decades-long involvement at Sizewell – from dewatering works at Sizewell B in the 1980s, to hydrogeological investigations in 2010 and 2019. Today, we’re delivering advanced, detailed groundwater and surface water modelling and design to support Sizewell C as it enters the main construction phase.
Science Driven Sustainable Water Management
At WJ, we don’t just control water – we apply science-driven, field-proven solutions that enable sustainable infrastructure.
